Dr. Guillaume Mauger is the Washington State Climatologist and a research scientist University of Washington’s Climate Impacts Group. A climate scientist by training, Guillaume’s work focuses on understanding and assessing the impacts of climate change on human and natural systems, with a particular focus on flooding and stormwater.

Guillaume has worked on Skagit climate issues since joining the Climate Impacts Group in 2009, with a main focus on assessing the observed and projected changes in climate and hydrology within the basin.

Beyond the Skagit watershed, Guillaume’s work has ranged from quantifying community-scale sea level rise and surge risk, to collaborations with floodplain managers to integrate climate change into their work, to an assessment of the combined effects of sea level rise in river flooding on inundation risk. At the Climate Impacts Group, Guillaume also serves as a resource to stakeholders that are interested in obtaining and understanding the numerous climate and hydrologic projections that are now available.

Guillaume’s work is relevant to land use planners, resource managers, tribes, and anyone else whose property, health, or livelihood is affected by flooding. Although focused on areas at risk of flooding, Guillaume’s work with stakeholders has reinforced the notion that many planning questions require a watershed-scale perspective.
